[content title="About the author"]Roland Gérard Barthes was born during the First World War, in Cherbourg, to Louis Barthes, an officer in the merchant navy, Catholic, and Henriette Binger, a Protestant from the intellectual bourgeoisie. His maternal grandfather was the explorer Louis-Gustave Binger, who became governor of the colonies, and his grandmother, Noémi, received the intellectual Tout-Paris in the Panthéon3. His father was mobilized in 1914 as an ensign. He died during a naval battle in the North Sea on October 26, 1916. Roland Barthes spent his childhood in Bayonne until 1924, then in Paris, where he studied at Lycée Montaigne, and finally at Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He obtained the baccalaureate in 1934 and enrolled in classics at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Paris, where he helped found the Sorbonne's Ancient Theater Group4 and obtained his license in classics in 1939 (certificate of Greek studies, certificate of Latin studies, certificate of French literature and history of philosophy) [/content]
