[tab] [content title="Description"]The French edition of the second volume of *Histoire de l'Afrique du Nord* has long been regarded as a valuable reference for students studying Middle Eastern, West African, and North African history. Now, a revised French edition by Roger Le Tourneau, which includes an essential bibliographic guide, has been translated into English. This aims to meet the needs of English-speaking historians seeking information about North Africa's past, as well as satisfying the general reader's interest in the region's sociology, economics, art, and archaeology. Charles-André Julien explores a pivotal era in North African history, characterized by the rise and fall of various dynasties that never managed to establish lasting unity. During this time, Islam became a fundamental aspect of the social, political, and national identity of the region. The process of Islamization began as early as the late seventh century and reached its peak after the Almohads' victory in the twelfth century, establishing an inseparable link between the Maghrib and Islam. Julien emphasizes the significance of the Muslim perspective, arguing that the challenges faced by North Africa cannot be fully understood without considering this crucial element of its history. The first four chapters draw heavily from Arab writers, presenting a chronological account that starts with the Arab conquest and covers the history of the Kharijite kingdoms from the sixth to eighth centuries, as well as the Berber empires of the Almoravids and Almohads in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The final two chapters focus on the Sharifian Empire in Morocco from 1533 to 1830 and the Turkish rule in Algeria and Tunisia from 1516 to 1830. A glossary is included to clarify Arabic terms and their usage in Maghrib Islam. [/content] [content title="Content"] [/content] [content title="Author(s)"] [/content] [/tab]
