[tab] [content title="Description"] **Obesity** has become a leading public health issue worldwide. Before 1980, fewer than 10% of the population was affected by obesity. Since then, this proportion has doubled or even tripled in many countries, and in nearly half of the OECD area, 50% or more of the population is now overweight. As a major risk factor for a range of chronic diseases, obesity has become a significant public health problem. It is commonly believed that the obesity epidemic has simple explanations, and that solutions should be forthcoming soon. However, a detailed examination of the data reveals a much more complex situation, in which it is even difficult to find objective information about the phenomenon. Authorities, health professionals, and researchers face the challenge of understanding the epidemic and developing effective strategies to combat it. This book contributes to the development of scientifically grounded policies by studying multiple aspects of the obesity problem. It examines the extent and characteristics of the epidemic, the respective roles and influences of market forces and public authorities, and the impact of interventions. An economic approach to the prevention of chronic diseases is presented, which offers new perspectives compared to the more traditional approach to public health. The analyses presented in this book have been carried out by the OECD, partly in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The main chapters are complemented by special contributions from health and obesity experts such as Marc Suhrcke, Tim Lobstein, Donald Kenkel, and Francesco Branca. This book provides valuable insights and suggestions for preventive measures aimed at addressing the obesity epidemic and offers guidance for public policy aimed at combating this growing issue.
