For the French-speaking audience, however, access to Mill’s work had long been lost, as the only translation available was from 1864 and had never been reissued. This new volume fills that gap, providing a carefully selected compilation of the most important sections of Mill’s original work. In *Principles of Political Economy*, Mill emerges as a classical liberal in economic theory, advocating for free competition and a laissez-faire approach, which he believed should remain the "general rule." However, he also introduces notable qualifications to this doctrine, marking his departure from orthodox political economy. Mill’s ideas are distinctive for the restrictions he places on pure laissez-faire, signaling a more nuanced perspective than his contemporaries. The work also reveals Mill as a radical reformist in social philosophy. In the chapter on the "future of the laboring classes," Mill passionately argues for a much more equitable primary distribution of wealth, advocating for the association of capital and labor, or the promotion of workers as self-employed, freely associated entrepreneurs. This notion is further developed in his remarkable chapter on the "stationary state," where Mill touches on ecological concerns (in a Malthusian vein) and foreshadows the emancipatory themes of his later work, *On Liberty* (1859), where he advocates for full individual freedom. This volume provides readers with a rich understanding of Mill’s evolving ideas on both political economy and social reform, illustrating his progressive thought on the structure of society, the economy, and the role of the state in ensuring a more just distribution of wealth.
