[tab] [content title="Summary"] The remarkable power of the invisible kingdom of microbes is increasingly recognized for their essential role in health and disease. Recent research has shown that microbes make up nearly 20% of the total living biomass, offering numerous benefits to humanity. As Kinichiro Sakaguchi aptly stated, "Microorganisms will give you anything you want if you know how to ask them," highlighting the significant contributions of microorganisms to nearly every aspect of life on Earth. The ubiquitous nature of microbes, along with their co-evolution and co-diversification with humans, has established the foundation for the concept of the human microbiome. This microbiome is a critical component of human existence, playing diverse roles in health and the development of sustainable ecosystems. While studies on human microbial diversity date back to the 1860s with Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's examination of his oral and fecal microflora, we now understand that the microbiome is a complex ecosystem comprising archaea, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi. The composition of microbial communities varies not only between individuals but also among different organs within the same individual. Consequently, microbiome-based treatments tailored to specific populations may enhance conventional treatment approaches, leading to more personalized medical interventions. In the past decade, we have seen significant advancements in research related to the human microbiome, particularly the gut microbiome, and its crucial role in modulating key health and disease markers.
