[tab] [content title="Summary"] **Description:** Creativity is a central force that drives human progress across a vast array of fields—from the visual arts to cinema and theatre, and particularly in the realms of science and mathematics. This volume, published in the "Mathematics and Culture" series, highlights the deep interconnections between mathematics, culture, and creativity, showcasing how these areas intersect in unexpected and inspiring ways. The book emphasizes the role of mathematics in various forms of cultural expression, including: - **Architecture**: How mathematical principles underpin the design of buildings and structures, influencing both form and function in innovative ways. - **Contemporary Art**: The use of mathematical concepts in modern art to explore space, form, and symmetry, and how artists incorporate geometry and numerical thinking into their works. - **Geometry**: A discussion of the central role geometry plays in both the physical world and artistic representations, creating a bridge between abstract concepts and tangible experiences. - **Computer Graphics**: The mathematical algorithms that power computer-generated imagery, enabling creativity in digital art, animation, and visual effects. - **Literature**: How patterns, structure, and rhythm in writing can be analyzed through mathematical lenses, providing new insights into narrative and language. - **Theatre and Cinema**: Exploring how mathematical concepts are used in set design, camera angles, editing techniques, and even in the narrative structures of films. While the book is certainly designed for mathematicians, its scope extends far beyond that. It is also aimed at anyone with an interest in culture—scientific, literary, or visual—offering insights into how mathematics influences and shapes various forms of cultural expression. The emphasis on visual aspects makes it particularly engaging for those interested in the intersection of math and art, providing a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the world around us. Whether you're a mathematician, artist, architect, or someone fascinated by the connections between science and culture, this volume will provide a thought-provoking exploration of creativity in mathematics and its far-reaching impact on human culture. Year:2009
Langue: English

[tab] [content title="Summary"] World energy consumption has grown significantly over the past few decades. This increase in energy demand will be driven by substantial economic growth, population growth, and rising living standards in rapidly developing countries. In recent years, there has been frequent mention of a "renaissance" of nuclear energy. The recognition that nuclear power is essential for global energy security in the 21st century has been growing for some time. "The more we look to the future, the more we can expect countries to consider the potential benefits that expanding nuclear power can offer for the global environment and for economic growth," said IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei ahead of the "International Conference on Fifty Years of Nuclear Power – the Next Fifty Years" in Moscow, where 500 nuclear power experts gathered. However, this renaissance is not a certainty. Four major unresolved issues remain: high relative costs, perceived safety, environmental, and health concerns, potential security risks related to proliferation, and unresolved challenges in the long-term management of nuclear waste. Failure to adequately address these questions could jeopardize the nuclear revival that many have proclaimed to be imminent. This proceeding examines the current status and future of nuclear power based on the belief that this technology is an important option for regional and global energy needs, without emitting carbon dioxide and other atmospheric pollutants. The objectives, aimed at government, industry, and academic leaders, discuss the interconnected technical, economic, environmental, and political challenges that will face a significant increase in global nuclear power utilization over the next fifty years and what can be done to overcome these challenges. [tab] [content title="Summary"] *Introductory Stochastic Analysis for Finance and Insurance* provides essential tools for modeling and pricing within the finance and insurance sectors. This book introduces readers to key stochastic analysis techniques necessary for mathematical finance, focusing on practical applications, intuition, and computational methods rather than theoretical aspects. The text is aimed at graduate students, researchers, and practitioners interested in these fields. While it is self-contained, a background in probability theory is recommended for readers. The book is based on the author's extensive teaching experience and has been thoroughly classroom-tested. **Key Features:** - **Overview of Probability Theory** - **Discrete-Time Stochastic Processes** - **Continuous-Time Stochastic Processes** - **Basic Topics in Stochastic Calculus** The final chapters delve into advanced topics, including the Feynman-Kac formula, Girsanov's theorem, and complex barrier hitting time distributions. Additionally, the book applies stochastic analysis to practical scenarios, featuring two insurance examples: valuing equity-linked annuities in a stochastic interest rate environment and calculating reserves for universal life insurance. Figures and tables throughout the text simplify complex theories and processes, and an extensive bibliography directs readers to further research on specialized topics. This book is well-suited for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in stochastic finance and calculus and serves as a valuable study guide for professionals preparing for actuarial examinations from the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA). Arithmetic duality theorems

PDF
Author(s):J. S. Milne
Collection:
Publisher:BookSurge Publishing
Year:2006
Langue: English
Pages: 339 pages
Size:1.52 MB
Extension:PDF

[tab] [content title="Description"] This book is designed for research mathematicians and focuses on the duality theorems that have gained significance in number theory and arithmetic geometry, notably in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. The content addresses duality theorems in Galois, étale, and flat cohomology for both local and global fields, as well as their corresponding rings of integers. It also explores topics such as cohomological dimension, finiteness, and Euler-Poincaré characteristics, making it a valuable reference for these subjects. Reviews of the first edition highlight its comprehensive approach. Mathematical Reviews, by Gerd Faltings, notes that it serves as an excellent general reference for the discussed topics. Zentralblatt MATH, through L. Badescu, points out that much of the foundational work by Tate, Artin, Verdier, and others was never fully published; thus, this book aims to provide a self-contained and systematic treatment of these developments. [content title="Description"]This graduate textbook presents a concrete and up-to-date introduction to the theory of Coxeter groups. The book is self-contained, making it suitable either for courses and seminars or for self-study. The first part is devoted to establishing concrete examples. Finite reflection groups acting on Euclidean spaces are discussed, and the first part ends with the construction of the affine Weyl groups, a class of Coxeter groups that plays a major role in Lie theory. The second part (which is logically independent of, but motivated by, the first) develops from scratch the properties of Coxeter groups in general, including the Bruhat ordering and the seminal work of Kazhdan and Lusztig on representations of Hecke algebras associated with Coxeter groups is introduced. Finally a number of interesting complementary topics as well as connections with Lie theory are sketched. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography on Coxeter groups and their applications.
