[tab] [content title="Summary"] Today, DIY—do-it-yourself—encompasses much more than self-taught carpentry. Social media has empowered DIY citizens to organize and protest in innovative ways, exemplified by Egypt's "Twitter revolution" of 2011, and to repurpose corporate content or generate new user-created content to present political counternarratives. This book explores the utility and limitations of DIY citizenship, investigating the various forms of political participation and "critical making" that have emerged in recent years. The authors and artists featured in this collection highlight DIY citizens engaged in activities ranging from activist fan blogging and video production to knitting and creating community gardens. Contributors delve into DIY activism, showcasing new modes of civic engagement such as Harry Potter fan activism and the initiatives of the Yes Men. They examine DIY practices in learning, culture, hacking, and the arts, including do-it-yourself media production and collaborative documentary making. Additionally, the book discusses how DIY and design empower citizens to demystify technological infrastructures, promoting open and participatory critical making. It also explores the relationship between DIY and media, detailing activists’ efforts to reshape and reimagine media and the public sphere. As these chapters illustrate, DIY is marked by its focus on "doing" and making rather than passive consumption. DIY citizens take on active roles as interventionists, makers, hackers, modders, and tinkerers, striving for new forms of engaged and participatory democracy.
