[tab] [content title="Description"]This book looks at aging through research on Drosophila, the fruit fly that is one of the most widely used model organisms in biogerontology. Work in model organisms can expand the theoretical knowledge of aging: it yields valuable insight into the molecular and cellular processes that underlie aging process, and it can perhaps provide new therapeutic targets for the treatment of age-related disorders in humans. [/content] [content title="Content"] [/content] [content title="About the author"]Robert Dilts has been a developer, author, trainer and consultant in the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) - a model of human behavior, learning and communication - since its creation in 1975 by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. A long time student and colleague of both Grinder and Bandler, Robert also studied personally with Milton H. Erickson, M.D., and Gregory Bateson. In addition to spearheading the applications of NLP in education, creativity, health, and leadership, his personal contributions to the field of NLP include much of the seminal work on the NLP techniques of Strategies and Belief Systems, and the development of what has become known as 'Systemic NLP.' The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery

Pages: 400 pages

[tab] [content title="Summary"] Our understanding of cancer is undergoing a significant revolution, paving the way for more effective treatments. For the first time, the death rate from cancer is steadily declining, but the "War on Cancer" is far from over. In *The Cancer Code*, Dr. Jason Fung presents a groundbreaking perspective on this invasive and often fatal disease—explaining what it is, how it develops, and why it poses such treatment challenges. Dr. Fung highlights the medical community's many missteps in cancer research, particularly its emphasis on genetics—the "seed" of cancer—while neglecting the "soil," or the conditions that allow cancer to thrive. His work, which has gained international recognition for its focus on obesity and diabetes, posits that the primary pathway of cancer is linked to insulin dysregulation. Notably, obesity and type 2 diabetes significantly elevate an individual's cancer risk. In this accessible book, Dr. Fung offers a new paradigm for addressing cancer, recommending strategies to create an unfavorable environment for this dangerous seed. One such approach is intermittent fasting, which helps reduce blood glucose and lower insulin levels. Another is to eliminate insulin-stimulating foods, such as sugar and refined carbohydrates. For centuries, cancer has been viewed as a foreign invader we are powerless to combat. By redefining cancer as an internal uprising of our own healthy cells, we can regain control. While the seed of cancer may exist within us all, the power to change the soil lies in our hands. [/content] [content title="Content"] [/content] [content title="Author(s)"] [/content] [/tab]

Role of Microbes in Sustainable Development: Human Health and Diseases

[tab] [content title="Summary"] The remarkable power of the invisible kingdom of microbes is increasingly recognized for their essential role in health and disease. Recent research has shown that microbes make up nearly 20% of the total living biomass, offering numerous benefits to humanity. As Kinichiro Sakaguchi aptly stated, "Microorganisms will give you anything you want if you know how to ask them," highlighting the significant contributions of microorganisms to nearly every aspect of life on Earth. The ubiquitous nature of microbes, along with their co-evolution and co-diversification with humans, has established the foundation for the concept of the human microbiome. This microbiome is a critical component of human existence, playing diverse roles in health and the development of sustainable ecosystems. While studies on human microbial diversity date back to the 1860s with Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's examination of his oral and fecal microflora, we now understand that the microbiome is a complex ecosystem comprising archaea, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi. The composition of microbial communities varies not only between individuals but also among different organs within the same individual. Consequently, microbiome-based treatments tailored to specific populations may enhance conventional treatment approaches, leading to more personalized medical interventions. In the past decade, we have seen significant advancements in research related to the human microbiome, particularly the gut microbiome, and its crucial role in modulating key health and disease markers. Genetic Counseling for Trans* Populations: Development of Educational Material for Genetic Counseling Programs

[tab] [content title="Summary"] Transgender, or trans*, is an umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth. As members of a gender minority, the trans* community faces significant health disparities and discrimination in healthcare settings. Genetic counselors may play a role in the medical care of trans* individuals when there is a risk for genetic conditions. Their responsibilities include providing genetic information and culturally competent psychosocial support. A recent survey revealed that fewer than half of genetic counselors felt confident in their ability to counsel trans* clients, highlighting a need for further education on this topic. This study aims to enhance genetic counselors’ knowledge regarding counseling trans* individuals by developing educational resource materials for genetic counseling training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). A Qualtrics survey was distributed to leaders of ACGC-accredited programs to evaluate their current methods of teaching trans* health education and their openness to additional resources that could improve students’ comfort in counseling trans* patients. The survey results showed that 90% of responding programs offer some education on genetic counseling for trans* individuals, and 85% indicated that additional educational resources would be beneficial. Based on these findings, four resources were created: 1) A series of case examples with roleplay opportunities, 2) An annotated list of resources for trans* patients, including allied healthcare providers and legal support, 3) An annotated list of resources for healthcare providers working with trans* clients, and 4) An annotated list of peer-reviewed articles on genetic counseling for trans* populations. Additionally, an educational resource guide was developed to assist users in navigating these materials. This study is significant for public health as it increases the educational resources available to genetic counseling programs and their students, aiming to improve genetic counselors’ competency in working with trans* clients.
