Genetic Counseling for Trans* Populations: Development of Educational Material for Genetic Counseling Programs

[tab] [content title="Summary"] Transgender, or trans*, is an umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth. As members of a gender minority, the trans* community faces significant health disparities and discrimination in healthcare settings. Genetic counselors may play a role in the medical care of trans* individuals when there is a risk for genetic conditions. Their responsibilities include providing genetic information and culturally competent psychosocial support. A recent survey revealed that fewer than half of genetic counselors felt confident in their ability to counsel trans* clients, highlighting a need for further education on this topic. This study aims to enhance genetic counselors’ knowledge regarding counseling trans* individuals by developing educational resource materials for genetic counseling training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). A Qualtrics survey was distributed to leaders of ACGC-accredited programs to evaluate their current methods of teaching trans* health education and their openness to additional resources that could improve students’ comfort in counseling trans* patients. The survey results showed that 90% of responding programs offer some education on genetic counseling for trans* individuals, and 85% indicated that additional educational resources would be beneficial. Based on these findings, four resources were created: 1) A series of case examples with roleplay opportunities, 2) An annotated list of resources for trans* patients, including allied healthcare providers and legal support, 3) An annotated list of resources for healthcare providers working with trans* clients, and 4) An annotated list of peer-reviewed articles on genetic counseling for trans* populations. Additionally, an educational resource guide was developed to assist users in navigating these materials. This study is significant for public health as it increases the educational resources available to genetic counseling programs and their students, aiming to improve genetic counselors’ competency in working with trans* clients.
